Billie Eilish Almost Scrapped “Birds of a Feather,” Saying She Thought It Was “Kind of Stupid”

Since its arrival in 2024, “Birds of a Feather” has grown into one of Billie Eilish’s most prominent songs. In a Wall Street Journal profile published on Oct. 29, 2025, Eilish admitted she came close to removing the track altogether, worrying it sounded too lightweight for her catalogue.

Speaking with the Wall Street Journal, Eilish said she and her brother-producer Finneas spent nearly a year refining the song in the studio. Even after the record was finished, she told label executives she felt the song was “kind of stupid” and repeatedly considered cutting it from the final sequence.

Ultimately, “Birds of a Feather” remained on Eilish’s third studio album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, which was released in May 2024 and debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. The upbeat single went on to spend three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 and finished 2024 as Spotify’s most-streamed track of the year with roughly 1.781 billion streams; the song has since surpassed 3 billion streams on the platform.

The song now serves as the closing number on Eilish’s setlist for the Hit Me Hard and Soft tour. The tour, which kicked off in September 2024, is winding down — with the remaining dates concluding in November 2025 with a two-night finale in San Francisco.

When asked about the length of the touring cycle, Eilish told the Wall Street Journal that she deliberately paced the schedule to allow extended breaks. “It takes longer, and you make less money that way,” she said. “But for me, it’s magical.”
