Ben Affleck Calls Justice League Reshoots “Gross”

In a candid new interview, Ben Affleck opened up about his deeply unpleasant experience during the reshoots for the superhero epic Justice League, in which he portrayed Batman.

In 2016, Warner Bros. brought in Joss Whedon (The Avengers) to take over the project after original director Zack Snyder stepped down following the tragic suicide of his daughter. Reflecting on the production, Affleck described the studio’s treatment of Snyder as “vile” and labeled the reshoot process the definitive “low point” of his professional career.

Working on Justice League was a profoundly negative experience for a multitude of reasons—some stemming from my own personal struggles, and others linked to the unspeakable tragedy occurring at the time. I learned exactly how not to make a film when a studio chooses to alienate its director; it is a massive mistake. I was thrilled that Zack finally got his version released; it was fantastic, and I was so happy for him. When someone dies by suicide, that reality eclipses everything else. Seeing that tragedy used as a pretext [to push Zack out] was among the most disgusting things I have ever witnessed. It was horrific. The toxic atmosphere and energy on set—which I heard about from other cast members—was simply appalling. I was drinking far too much… I was going through a divorce. It was an incredibly difficult time for me personally, but those events, while painful, were separate from the systemic failures of the film itself,

— Affleck recounted during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

The theatrical version of the film was ultimately panned by critics, grossing $661 million against a massive $300 million budget. Snyder eventually debuted his definitive cut of Justice League on HBO Max in 2021.

Affleck’s latest directorial project, Animals, premiered on Netflix last week.
