Baldur’s Gate 3 Breaks on Consoles Following Popular Mod Removal

Some players managed to finish the adventure and now do not have to worry about affected saves.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has official support for user-created modifications. Fans of Larian Studios can also install mods not only on PC, as a selection of projects is available on consoles.

Baldur’s Gate 3 recently broke for some players. This happened shortly after the popular modification “Transmogs and Spelltheft” was removed from Nexus Mods and mod.io. The author of “Transmogs and Spelltheft” ran into issues with the community and decided to take down their projects.

Thanks to “Transmogs and Spelltheft,” players could “become anyone,” as the mod allowed a character to take on the appearance of more than a hundred different NPCs.

Now, players who used the mod are worried about their save files. Some players on PlayStation and Xbox have started encountering game crashes.

Those who tried to solve the problem by deleting the mod ran into a technical limitation of modding Baldur’s Gate 3 on consoles. Reports indicate that it is impossible to load an old save on consoles without all the previously used mods:

If the mod is installed on your PC, everything will likely be fine: you can delete it and still launch your old saves. On consoles, however, you will be asked to reinstall all mods that were used in that save before you are allowed to load it. You can add mods to a save, but you cannot remove them. Larian implemented this restriction so that newcomers wouldn’t accidentally ruin their saves, but unfortunately, it may now cause some playthroughs to become completely unplayable.

A user named SecretResort9 played on Xbox and shared that they used the Quick Resume feature to continue their playthrough. They were already at the end and therefore managed to finish the game without any issues.

After “Transmogs and Spelltheft” was removed from the platform, some players retained access to the mod. They will not be able to reinstall it if they disable it, meaning they will apparently have to keep using it in future playthroughs or risk losing access to their old files.
