‘Another Round’ Director to Adapt Astrid Lindgren’s ‘The Brothers Lionheart’

Danish director Thomas Vinterberg (Another Round, The Hunt) is developing a limited series inspired by Astrid Lindgren’s novel The Brothers Lionheart for the Apple TV streaming service.

Vinterberg’s plans were first reported in spring 2024 via industry coverage. Lindgren’s original tale was published in 1973. It follows the boy Jonatan and his brother Karl Lejon, who is ill with tuberculosis; the siblings journey to the fairyland Nangiyala, adopt the name Lionheart and undergo a succession of tests and adventures.

Vinterberg is set to direct every episode, with British playwright Simon Stephens handling the adaptation. Casting and a release date have not been announced. The most familiar screen version of the story remains the 1977 film directed by Olle Hellbom.
