Even before the release of MindsEye, the community discussed that the game was not ready and should be postponed. As Tuesday showed, these concerns were well-founded. The new video game from the former producer of Grand Theft Auto and ex-president of Rockstar North, despite several patches, ended up full of problems that could have been avoided with a little more development time.
Players encountered constant crashes, poor optimization (even on PS5 Pro), and incredible bugs. Some have even become memes.
Overall, MindsEye’s launch is compared to Cyberpunk 2077 and GTA: Trilogy — Definitive Edition. Competing even with the original GTA: San Andreas is tough — the NPC logic is simply incomparable.
Naturally, this led to criticism from press and gamers. Currently, there are almost fifteen hundred reviews on Steam, mostly negative. On Metacritic, the PC version (console reviews are yet to be determined, but are unlikely to differ much) has a score of 43 out of 100 from critics and 2.7 out of 10 from users. IGN gave it 4/10, suggesting reconsideration before purchasing. However, if the purchase was made, PlayStation owners, for example, have no issues getting refunds. Unsurprisingly, the media did not receive review copies, and some sponsored streams were canceled or postponed.
The “GTA 6 killer” status hyped by enthusiasts is certainly not a threat to MindsEye. It is unlikely even to captivate players this summer, and a collaboration with HITMAN won’t save it. Leslie Benzies should have delayed the project to fall or even winter. It might have turned out better. Interestingly, his former colleagues at Rockstar Games, after releasing a press release about the GTA Online update, politely postponed it by a day.
