Amazon’s God of War Series to Recast Kratos Following Ryan Hurst’s On-Set Injury

When Amazon Prime first unveiled the initial glimpse of Ryan Hurst and Callum Vinson as Kratos and Atreus for the upcoming God of War series back in February, fan reception was noticeably split. Despite the mixed reactions, the streaming giant’s track record with other major game adaptations—most notably the success of Fallout—kept anticipation high. Unfortunately, the production has hit a significant roadblock: reports indicate that Amazon is seeking a new lead actor for Kratos following a severe injury sustained by Ryan Hurst on set.

According to Deadline, Hurst suffered a torn bicep during a stunt sequence in late June. While the actor had committed to a rigorous physical regimen, adding 40 pounds of muscle to embody the Spartan warrior, the severity of the tear necessitated surgery and an extended hiatus. With a recovery window of four to six months—making it impossible for him to maintain the physical requirements of the role—the studio has reportedly decided to pivot and recast the lead rather than delay the series until 2027.

Before the production was halted, the team had already successfully filmed four full episodes. Insiders suggest that casting efforts for a new Kratos will begin in August, with the goal of resuming full-scale shooting by October.

Despite this major shift, Amazon’s original plan to shoot two seasons back-to-back remains firmly in place. The remaining cast members confirmed for the series include:

  • Callum Vinson as Atreus
  • Ed Skrein as Baldur
  • Max Parker as Heimdall
  • Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor
  • Mandy Patinkin as Odin
  • Alastair Duncan as Mimir
  • Danny Woodburn as Brok
  • Jeff Gulka as Sindri
