After 16 Years, This Underrated Battle Anime Finally Arrives on Crunchyroll

Typically, the momentum of a successful manga translates into an anime adaptation while the source material is still hitting the shelves. Occasionally, however, audiences must endure a grueling 16-year wait to see their favorite series finally make the leap to the screen. Such is the journey of Toshiaki Iwashiro’s Psyren, an enigmatic supernatural thriller that ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2007 to 2010. Despite moving over 4 million copies and enjoying significant commercial appeal, the franchise sat dormant until its long-awaited anime production was finally unveiled in 2025.

Poised for an October 2026 premiere, Psyren recently debuted its first official trailer at Crunchyroll’s Japan Expo 2026 panel in Paris. The teaser introduces viewers to leads Ageha Yoshina and Sakurako Amamiya, two high schoolers thrust into a perilous, monster-ridden dimension by the shadowy organization known as Psyren. To survive, these abductees must navigate a hostile, shifting reality if they ever hope to find their way back home.

Psyren checks every box for a quintessential shonen action series: an upright, high-school protagonist, a childhood companion in peril, and a diverse ensemble cast wielding unique abilities. Beyond the adrenaline-fueled battles, the story weaves in an occult mystery that elevates the narrative far above generic genre tropes. Its pedigree is undeniable, having secured a nomination in Anime Japan’s prestigious “manga we want to see animated” poll on three separate occasions.

Perhaps the only tragedy of Psyren was that it concluded just before the global explosion of anime in the 2010s. It is deeply satisfying to see the modern industry’s current reach finally granting cult classics the spotlight they’ve long deserved. Now, if we could just manifest a Vagabond adaptation… (A fan can dream, right?)
