Activists Demand Physical PS5 Games Be Preserved While Amazon Destroys Unsold Discs

Physical copies were simply taking up space while sitting in storage.

This summer, Sony announced its decision to phase out physical discs for PlayStation games. Shortly afterward, the company faced heavy online criticism. Some users even declared an indefinite boycott, vowing not to use Sony consoles and services until the company reversed its decision. However, according to analyst data, this boycott had no significant impact on PlayStation engagement metrics.

A post by user denemereiz123 has now gone viral in the gaming community. The user introduced themselves as an Amazon employee working in a warehouse.

According to denemereiz123, management instructed them to destroy physical PlayStation game copies and music discs because nobody is buying the products. The user published a photo of a box filled with discs:

Some people might naturally wonder why the goods are not simply given away to employees if nobody wants them. However, doing so could trigger tax issues, while continuing to store unrequested merchandise creates financial losses.

Another participant in the discussion explained that holding a clearance sale to sell the discs for a nominal $10 is also out of the question: “This would damage the brand image, so they will simply get rid of them.”
