Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies VR Just Announced For 2027 – I Have Some Objections

While devoted followers of the courtroom adventure franchise have spent years anticipating news of a brand-new installment, Capcom has instead delivered an entirely unexpected twist. Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies VR reimagines the series' fifth mainline entry for virtual reality platforms, slated for a Meta headset release next year. You can catch the official reveal trailer below.

This immersive port introduces a hands-on dynamic to the courtroom drama, enabling players to physically pick up evidence for close inspection, scour crime scenes from a first-person perspective, and utilize physical gestures paired with voice recognition during cross-examinations. Yes, you can literally shout "Objection!" to dismantle a witness's contradictory testimony. However, you won't remain behind Apollo's eyes 100% of the time; courtroom dialogue sequences shift to a third-person viewpoint, ensuring you still get to witness the trademark, over-the-top animations of Phoenix, Apollo, and Athena.

According to storefront listings, the game targets Meta Quest 3S, Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest Pro, and Meta Quest 2, though developer Amata K.K.'s official communications have excluded the original base Meta Quest from that compatibility list. The title launches sometime in 2027.

Speaking candidly, this feels like a peculiar direction for the franchise. Capcom has generally been wonderfully thorough in bringing older adventures to modern hardware through polished HD collections. Following the 2024 launch of the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection, virtually the entire catalog—barring the Professor Layton crossover—was playable on contemporary systems. Consequently, most fans presumed a brand-new sequel was the logical next step, making a VR adaptation quite the curveball.

Furthermore, Ace Attorney is hardly a franchise crying out for virtual reality immersion. As delightful as it might initially feel to bellow objections into your living room, the vast majority of the experience consists of reading unvoiced dialogue. Unlike premier VR experiences designed for intense, short-burst sessions, these narratives span dozens of hours, and strapping a headset to your face purely to parse text for hours on end holds limited appeal.

Admittedly, *Dual Destinies* ranks as my least favorite entry in the series, though I can grasp why Capcom selected it for this experiment. As the franchise's fifth chapter, it marked the pivotal transition into 3D character models, making it the earliest release structurally equipped for a VR translation. While newcomers can technically jump in here without prior context, I would invariably point enthusiasts toward the original trilogy's HD compilation instead.

A far more suitable candidate for a VR makeover would have been The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. It stands as a superior standalone narrative and carries a bit more temporal distance, having debuted in 2021 compared to the more recent 2024 release of the Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy. Nevertheless, because *Dual Destinies* offers a slightly more compact runtime alongside a beloved, familiar roster of characters, it makes for a safer foundational project.

The silver lining here is that production responsibilities rest entirely with Amata K.K. rather than internal Capcom teams, leaving ample hope that Ace Attorney 7 remains actively underway without heavy interruptions. Perhaps strapping on the headset will fundamentally reshape my skepticism toward Dual Destinies, though that remains a tall order. We will find out definitively when the game arrives next year.
