When the trio Above & Beyond released Bigger Than All of Us this past July, fans welcomed it as their first fully electronic studio album in seven years. Issued on the group’s Anjunadeep imprint, the record arrived after a headline set on Coachella’s Outdoor Stage and an extensive North American amphitheater tour.

A newly released documentary now takes viewers behind the scenes of the album’s creation, assembling studio footage, candid conversations and the creative impulses that shaped the 16-track collection. Titled Stepping In: The Making of Bigger Than All of Us, the film premieres Friday, Nov. 7 on Above & Beyond’s and Billboard’s YouTube channels.

The movie interweaves rare archival clips from the band’s early days with present-day studio sequences that reveal the trio’s meticulous process. Below is an exclusive excerpt from the documentary that highlights those moments.

The clip follows Paavo Siljamäki, Tony McGuinness and Jono Grant working alongside frequent collaborator Zoê Johnston, whose distinctive vocals thread through many of the album’s songs. Grant explains that a central goal for the record was to rediscover “the DNA of Above & Beyond” — a sound he traces back to their 2006 debut, Tri-State, and to recapture some of the frankness and naïveté of those early sessions.

McGuinness reflects on that influence, noting that the freedom they felt while making Tri-State fostered an authentic voice for the band. He adds that while the group has deep roots in the trance scene, they’ve never limited themselves to a single genre — their work has always moved between and beyond those boundaries.
