Harlem visionary A$AP Rocky stepped into the spotlight as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live this weekend, delivering a masterclass in stagecraft to celebrate his latest sonic evolution.

The rapper utilized his inaugural SNL appearance to showcase tracks from his long-awaited fourth studio album, Don’t Be Dumb, which arrived just 24 hours prior to the broadcast. Rocky’s presence at Studio 8H marked a major milestone in the rollout for the new project.

For his opening set, Rocky delivered a high-octane, star-studded rendition of the lead single, “Punk Rocky.” The performance featured a surprising ensemble of legends, with iconic film composer Danny Elfman manning the drums and bass virtuoso Thundercat holding down the low end.

Mirroring the frenetic energy of the track’s music video, Rocky appeared on a gritty, spray-painted set adorned with pink hair rollers and a megaphone. The chaotic atmosphere was heightened by a rowdy group of performers who systematically trashed the stage as the song reached its climax.

Rocky later returned to the stage for a more atmospheric medley, blending the heavy rhythms of “Helicopter” with the sprawling title track of the new LP.

Beyond his musical contributions, the artist flexed his comedic timing in the “Snackhomiez” sketch. He joined Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard and pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter for a parody focused on the niche world of snack-review podcasts.

Don’t Be Dumb arrives as a star-studded affair, featuring guest spots from Tyler, The Creator and Doechii. It serves as the official follow-up to 2018’s Testing, which reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200. Rocky previously dominated the charts with back-to-back No. 1 albums, 2013’s Long. Live. ASAP and 2015’s At. Long. Last. ASAP.

While Saturday night marked his first official stint as the featured musical guest, Rocky is no stranger to the SNL universe. He previously made a memorable appearance in the 2018 “Friendos” sketch alongside Donald Glover and Kenan Thompson.
