Dinosaur Jr.’s 1994 track “Over Your Shoulder” hit the Billboard Japan charts this week, topping the Hot Overseas chart and getting into the Hot 100 at #18 (above different Western artists equivalent to Ariana Grande and Queen). The closing monitor from their album Without a Sound garnered the vast majority of its performs in Japan through YouTube, in response to a Billboard report, racking up a staggering eight million views final week. Nobody appears to know why.

“Over Your Shoulder” was by no means launched as a single, and has not been reissued in any capability in Japan lately. It doesn’t seem in a brand new fashionable movie, nor does it seem to soundtrack a meme or viral video. Pitchfork has been unable to supply the video or movies that garnered these performs; Billboard was additionally unable to seek out the supply of the eight million views. “The likely answer is that some unknown user uploaded a video or videos using these songs, which were then viewed enough times for the songs to make significant inroads into the ranking,” their report reads. It is feasible that the movies in query are region-locked to Japan.

Pitchfork has reached out to representatives for Dinosaur Jr., Billboard, and YouTube for additional remark.
