$80 Price Tag for GTA 6 is ‘Good for the Industry,’ Says Analyst

What is the appropriate price tag for the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6? One industry analyst suggests that pushing the cost to $80 would actually benefit the broader gaming ecosystem.

“We believe it is in Take-Two’s own interest—both as a major publisher and a partner to numerous developers—to elevate the standard price point for the entire industry,” remarked Omar Dessouky, a securities analyst at Bank of America. He shared these insights following discussions at the IICON Video Game Conference in Las Vegas, a premier summit tailored for senior executives and business leaders within the interactive entertainment sector.

As detailed by Seeking Alpha, Dessouky’s perspective emerges amidst concerns from other industry insiders who fear they may struggle to justify an $80 price point for their own titles if GTA 6 launches at a lower cost. Furthermore, Dessouky posits that the increasing integration of artificial intelligence will inevitably heighten the perceived value of games for consumers.

There is little doubt that GTA 6 is poised to be a monumental release, potentially setting new benchmarks for scale, content, and commercial success. Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, recently expressed to Bloomberg that the anticipation surrounding the title is “terrifying,” emphasizing that the company’s objective is to provide a gaming experience quite unlike anything players have encountered before.

“We are committed to delivering the absolute pinnacle of entertainment,” Zelnick noted. “Achieving that is an expensive endeavor. While AI is a factor, we haven’t seen development costs decrease—and we may not in the future.” Nevertheless, Zelnick underscored that Take-Two remains mindful of ensuring the final price tag “feels very reasonable” to the player base.

Should GTA 6 debut at $80, it would not be unprecedented in the current generation. Nintendo set a precedent last year by launching Mario Kart World for the Switch 2 at $79.99, though this remains an exception rather than the rule. Notably, Microsoft chose not to move forward with a $79.99 price for The Outer Worlds 2, suggesting that the industry remains cautious about whether every high-profile game can command such a premium.

It is worth noting that this rumored $80 figure is significantly lower than the extreme $100 price point that was previously speculated. As VGC highlighted, Take-Two was the catalyst for the shift to the $70 standard back in 2020 with NBA 2K21. Whether they will spark another industry-wide price hike remains to be seen.

We expect to gain more clarity soon, either through Take-Two’s upcoming earnings report or when Grand Theft Auto 6 finally makes its debut this November.
