Was the Sarcophagus constructed merely to inter the fourth reactor block?

Hardly. Its true purpose was far more defensive: it was built to ensure the fourth block wouldn’t entomb everything in its vicinity.

Following the initial catastrophe, the site was beyond conventional repair. Over the course of 206 grueling days, an immense man-made mountain of concrete and steel was erected over the wreckage—comprising 345,000 cubic meters of concrete and 7,000 tons of structural metal. These components had to be assembled from a distance, as the radiation levels rendered the immediate area inaccessible to human life.

The Sarcophagus was forged from a blend of new materials and the salvaged remnants of the ruined block itself. From its inception, it was viewed as a stopgap—a desperate attempt to buy time and provide a makeshift seal over the radioactive carnage within.

Trapped inside lay the vast majority of the fuel, shattered pieces of the reactor core, and toxic radioactive dust—a lethal landscape that remained unreachable for decades. Then came the second incident. Since that day, the Sarcophagus is discussed only in hushed tones. After all, one can never be certain if the Monolith is listening.

Perhaps, even now, it is paying close attention…
