Xbox is developing a Sea of Thieves movie and over a dozen other video game adaptations
Xbox management plans to expand the company into a dominant force in the global entertainment market.
Xbox executive Asha Sharma and president of content Matt Booty told Entertainment Weekly that more than a dozen film and television projects based on Xbox franchises are in development. The company also officially announced a feature film adaptation of Sea of Thieves.
Hisako Films, the production company led by Destin Daniel Cretton, is co-producing the movie. Cretton previously directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. The project currently lacks a screenwriter and a director.
Matt Booty noted that the Sea of Thieves adaptation poses a unique challenge. The game lacks a single protagonist because the focus remains on players and their collective experiences.
The company maintains a broad slate of other adaptations. The current list includes a Gears of War film for Netflix, a Call of Duty feature, a sequel to A Minecraft Movie, a third season of Fallout, a Wolfenstein series for Amazon, and animated series for Minecraft and Gears of War. A Fallout Shelter reality show is also in progress. Furthermore, King is exploring the potential for a Candy Crush animated film.
