What to watch on Netflix in May: A guide to all the new movies and shows

Even with Netflix’s recommendation algorithm serving you new movies, new TV shows, and original programming tailored to your viewing habits, the streaming service’s fire hose of content makes what’s coming difficult to parse.

The next season of Bridgerton is just around the corner — Polin (Penelope and Colin!) fans, this one’s for you! Jennifer Lopez has a sci-fi movie out, and the director of Napoleon Dynamite teams up with the showrunner of UniKitty! for an animated movie about a unicorn who’s not really a unicorn. From the back catalog, we have Shrek and a collection of 1984 movies.

Editor’s pick: The Edge of Seventeen

Director: Kelly Fremon Craig
Cast: Hailee Steinfeld, Woody Harrelson, Kyra Sedgwick

Anyone who was an awkward, self-proclaimed “unlikable” teenage girl will be completely and thoroughly read by The Edge of Seventeen. Hailee Steinfeld plays Nadine, a prickly teen girl coping with her father’s death. After her best friend starts dating Nadine’s brother, Nadine finds herself even more alone in the world, with only her surly English teacher (Woody Harrelson) to turn to. Nadine somehow keeps messing up over and over, but eventually has to confront her own mistakes and flaws. It’s charmingly funny, but also full of raw emotion, with wonderful performances from Steinfeld and Harrelson.
