Weezer already doubled-down earlier this year by dropping the baroque pop OK Human in January and the hard-rocking Van Weezer in May. But according to singer/guitarist Rivers Cuomo the notoriously prolific band is just getting started.
“I guess I’ve had a lot of time on my hands so I wrote four albums that we’ll put out next year,” Cuomo told Good Morning America earlier this week in a joint appearance with his Hella Mega Tour mate, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong. “It’s called Seasons, and each album comes out on the first day of the season. Spring is kind of like happy chill. And then we move through to dance rock, like a Strokes-style album for the fall, and then sad acoustic, Elliott Smith-style for winter.”
Cuomo did not say much more about what will be the band’s 16-19th albums and at press time a spokesperson could not be reached for additional details about the ambitious roll-out schedule or track listing. In the meantime, for the first time in their career, Weezer just scored two straight No. 1s on Billboard‘s Alternative Airplay chart, with “All My Favorite Songs” — the lead OK Human single — rising 2-1 on the survey dated July 24. It follows the one-week reign of the band’s “Hero” last August.
“All My Favorite Songs” is additionally Weezer’s first multi-radio format No. 1. It ruled Adult Alternative Airplay for three weeks in April, becoming the band’s first leader on the list.
In the same interview, Armstrong was asked if the band had any more new music on tap in the near future after releasing the one-off single “Pollyanna” in mid-May. “Not in the immediate future. But you know, we always get a wild hair and end up doing something,” he said. Green Day, Weezer and Fall Out Boy are gearing up to kick off their anticipated Hella Mega Tour on Saturday (July 24) in Dallas, Texas after postponing the outing for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
