Ryan Reynolds isn’t giving up his love of Mariah Carey‘s 1995 hit “Fantasy” now that Free Guy is out. In fact, Reynolds continues to obsess over the song — this time, with Mariah’s help on TikTok.
In a video posted to Carey’s account on Tuesday (Aug. 24), the singer performs a duet of her tune with the actor. The problem? He’s still in the role of Guy, his non-playable character in the movie, and completely misses his cue to start singing. As a result, Reynolds throws off the entire TikTok and earns a side-eye from Carey. “That wasn’t part of the plan!” she captioned the video.
Reynolds has stated that “Fantasy” — which peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1995 and spent 25 weeks on the chart — was central to the creative process while producing Free Guy, calling it the “engine” of the movie.
“I am a huge Mariah Carey fan,” Reynolds said in an interview with Variety. “It really was one of those weird things that happened naturally. I write to music anyway, and I initially put a song in the script by The Outfield called ‘Your Love.’ It’s an old ’80s tune. It’s great, but it just didn’t have that epic scale I was looking for. And then ‘Fantasy’ just came on my playlist and everything clicked in.”
Prior to the movie’s release — and their TikTok duet — Reynolds said he was able to reach out to Carey about the impact “Fantasy” had on Free Guy. “I got to speak with Mariah and talked to her a little bit about how much of an engine and an agent of progress that this song had been in terms of our creative process and the scripts,” he said. “She’s just been awesome about it.”
