M.I.A. was a visitor on “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah” final evening (September 25). She mentioned MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A., the documentary about her life and work. At the outset, she mentioned the completely different names within the title. “The first 10 years I spent in Sri Lanka, [Matangi is] what I was called,” she mentioned. “The next 10 years my name was Maya, but it was made up—it’s a fake name—but it’s nice ’cause it means ‘illusion,’ so it kind of worked out. And then I became M.I.A., which is when people kinda knew me in the world.” Watch the total interview beneath.
MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A. (directed by Stephen Loveridge and scored by Paul Hicks and Dhani Harrison) hits U.S. theaters on September 28. Read “M.I.A. vs. the System: A Complete Timeline of Her Controversies” on the Pitch.
