Iconic hip-hop artist Missy Elliott was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday and granted her own star. Friends and family attended the ceremony, and notable attendees included Ciara, Janelle Monae and Lizzo — and the “Rumors” rapper was able to give Missy her flowers directly in a speech during the event.
At the ceremony, Lizzo was given time to share her thoughts about the Virginia rapper, and she did not hold back on sharing her full appreciation for what Missy’s artistry has done for her and countless others.
“You have no idea what you have done for so many Black girls,” Lizzo said. “We don’t deserve you. We don’t deserve Missy Elliott, and still you continue to give to us and you’ve given with your heart. Your genius. Let me just drop some words: Genius! Icon! Queen of hip-hop! Visionary!”
The 33-year-old rapper continued, “I want to thank you so much for helping me in my career. I never in a million years thought I’d get to meet you, and not only did I get to meet you, but we worked in the studio together. Thank you for making my dreams comes true. You have no idea what you mean to all of us, Missy.”
Lizzo, a longtime Missy fan, was referring to getting the “Get Ur Freak On” artist to hop on her song “Tempo” in 2019, which ended up on Lizzo’s major-label debut Cuz I Love You, released that same year. Elliott also appeared alongside Lizzo in the song’s music video, delivering her energetic verse in her signature hypnotic style.
Following the event, Lizzo took to Twitter to express her excitement at getting to speak at the induction ceremony. “THE ICON OF MY LIFE… GETTING HER FLOWERS AND STARS… A LITERAL SUPERNOVA — NOW WITH A STAR ON THE HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME. MISSY RAN SO WE CAN FLYY ITS ALL FOR YOU MY QUEEN @MissyElliott THANK YOU,” she wrote.
Elliott also shared words of gratitude and pictures from the ceremony to her Twitter this morning and thanked Lizzo for her speech at the Walk of Fame event. “This is a moment that I shall never forget and all the people who have been on this journey with me, I thank you,” she wrote. “Thank you @lizzo for your kind words it truly moved my heart and I am grateful. Much love.”
