Warframe Pays Homage to Tabletop Gaming with a “Legally Distinct” RPG

A touch of tabletop magic is coming to Warframe. Digital Extremes has announced the integration of Fables & Frontiers, a self-described “legally distinct” roleplaying game that serves as a charming new minigame within the sci-fi epic.

Dedicated players will recognize the title from the 1999 expansion. It represents the beloved tabletop fantasy game that Amir—one of the central protoframes—has long dreamt of playing with his companions in the Hex. Now, that vision finally becomes a reality for players.

“We’ve decided this adventure will remain a permanent addition to the Hex,” explained Warframe creative director Rebecca Ford during a recent interview ahead of TennoCon 2026. “As we continue to evolve beyond the 1999 narrative, we realized this experience is simply too meaningful to be a temporary feature.”

Since the launch of Warframe: 1999, which introduced the fan-favorite protoframes standing against an alien threat, the community has grown deeply attached to these human-centric characters. Even as the game pivots toward the mysterious Tau star system, the developers remain committed to honoring the stories of the Hex.

“The community has been asking for years when they’d finally get to join Amir for a round of Fables & Frontiers,” added community director Megan Everett. “This is our way of sending a love letter to the players who have embraced these characters.”

To facilitate this, a specific zone within the Höllvania Mall is being transformed into a dedicated gaming den, complete with maps, tokens, and the ability to link up with Amir instantly. The minigame itself unfolds as a text-based adventure via the K.I.M. messaging system, deepening the bonds between the player and the Hex members.

The decision to bake a tabletop RPG into the game wasn’t just a whim; it stems from the development team’s own passion for the hobby. “It’s been a lifelong pursuit for many of us,” Ford noted. “From Dungeons & Dragons to Pathfinder, it’s a culture we’ve fostered at the studio.”

Beginning this August, the Nightwave system will transition into “Amir’s Shockwave,” featuring a slate of themed quests and exclusive rewards, including the new On-Lyne track, “Running Late.” It provides the perfect stage to dive into Fables & Frontiers.

The D&D-inspired atmosphere continues beyond this minigame, as renowned voice actor and Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer is set to join the voice cast in the upcoming Tau expansion, portraying the detective-archetype Warframe, Brysko.
