Upcoming Star Wars Movies and TV Shows Scheduled for 2027 and Beyond

2026 is a massive year for Star Wars. While 2025 featured the conclusion of Andor and Skeleton Crew alongside the return of Star Wars: Visions, the franchise had a relatively quiet period overall. Following mixed responses to Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker in 2019 and Solo: A Star Wars Story, most new projects shifted to television. These included live-action series such as The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Acolyte, and Ahsoka, as well as animation like The Bad Batch. Star Wars is finally returning to theaters with The Mandalorian and Grogu and Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter. Television remains part of the lineup through the animated Darth Maul series Maul: Shadow Lord and Visions’ Ninth Jedi rounding out Lucasfilm’s 2026.

Lucasfilm and Disney previously outlined plans for the future of the Star Wars universe, confirming specific release dates. Several movies were later canceled or shelved, including Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy and Kevin Feige’s project, while others faced delays like Donald Glover’s Lando film. Adam Driver leaked another previously unknown canceled project titled The Hunt for Ben Solo.

2027 Star Wars releases

Ahsoka season 2

Release date: Jan. 20, 2027, on Disney Plus

Season 2 of Ahsoka picks up after the first season with two branching storylines. The first follows Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) and Sabine (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) while Shin (Ivanna Sakhno) hunts them on Peridea. Rory McCann replaces the late Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll in this storyline. The second storyline follows Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) using his forces to attack a fledgling New Republic. Returning cast members include Eman Esfandi as Ezra Bridger, Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla.

Ahsoka’s second season touches on the arrival of the Mortis Gods.

Star Wars (50th Anniversary)

Release date: Feb. 19, 2027, in movie theaters

Lucasfilm confirmed that it will be showing the original Star Wars in theaters for a limited time everywhere, including 70 mm IMAX showings of George Lucas’ space adventure.

Screenings feature the original film without Greedo shooting first, CGI Jabba the Hutt, or digital Dewbacks, recreating the 1977 theatrical experience in February 2027.

Star Wars: Starfighter

Release date: May. 28, 2027, in movie theaters

Deadpool & Wolverine and Free Guy director Shawn Levy is making a Star Wars movie set after the sequel trilogy with a star-studded cast. Ryan Gosling stars alongside Matt Smith playing the villain, Mia Goth, Amy Adams, Flynn Gray, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, and Daniel Ings.

Top Gun: Maverick director of photography Claudio Miranda shoots the film.

Maul: Shadow Lord season 2

Following the first season of Darth Maul’s animated series, Lucasfilm brings back the ex-Sith Lord for a second season of Maul: Shadow Lord in 2027.

Untitled Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy Star Wars movie

Ms. Marvel director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy directs a Star Wars film taking place 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker. The movie is set in the New Jedi Order era and follows Rey Skywalker (Daisy Ridley) trying to rebuild the Jedi Order.

The project was initially linked to Damon Lindelof, but news broke in March 2023 that screenwriter Steven Knight replaced him. Knight later left the film. In January 2025, The Hollywood Reporter reported that George Nolfi joined the Rey film as a writer, which Nolfi confirmed. At Star Wars Celebration 2025, Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni reconfirmed that movies from James Mangold, Taika Waititi, Simon Kinberg, and the Rey movie remained in ongoing development. Following Kennedy’s departure as Lucasfilm president, the future of Obaid-Chinoy’s Rey movie remains unclear.

In an interview with Deadline, Kennedy did not mention the Rey movie as a future project at Lucasfilm.

Untitled Dave Filoni Star Wars movie

Dave Filoni directs a movie focusing on the New Republic government that comes to power after the Empire falls.

Set in the era connecting The Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, Lucasfilm stated the movie will close out interconnected stories told in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and other Disney Plus series.

Dave Filoni’s New Republic film was confirmed to be in development at Star Wars Celebration 2025.

Untitled James Mangold Star Wars movie (aka “Dawn of the Jedi”)

Logan and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold’s Star Wars film was confirmed to be in development at Star Wars Celebration 2025.

Mangold’s movie is set 25,000 years before the original trilogy during the dawn of the Jedi to explore questions about the origin and discovery of the Force.

At Star Wars Celebration 2023, Mangold described his movie as a biblical epic about the dawning of the Force. Kathleen Kennedy stated that Mangold was working on the script, though the project was put on the back burner according to the former Lucasfilm boss.

Untitled Simon Kinberg Star Wars movie trilogy

Writer-producer-director Simon Kinberg, who co-created and wrote for Star Wars: Rebels, develops a new Star Wars trilogy.

Reporting on the films varies: Deadline reported the movies comprise Episodes 10-12 of the Skywalker Saga, while The Hollywood Reporter stated they are not a continuation of the Skywalker Saga. Kathleen Kennedy confirmed the project is envisioned to take the franchise into a new future.

Kinberg told Nerdtropolis that being told there would be more movies and visiting sets was a dream. He cited Tony Gilroy’s Andor as a significant source of inspiration.

Untitled Taika Waititi Star Wars movie

Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi’s Star Wars project was first announced in 2020. Although its status was questioned in 2023, Kathleen Kennedy and Waititi confirmed it remains in development, with Waititi telling Entertainment Tonight in 2023 that he did not want to rush the movie.

Kennedy and Dave Filoni reconfirmed ongoing development at Star Wars Celebration 2025, and Kennedy stated in an interview that the project is still somewhat alive.

A Droid Story

In 2020, Lucasfilm announced several projects, with some reaching release or cancellation while others remain unmentioned.

A Droid Story is an animated film intended for Disney Plus following a new character guided by R2-D2 and C-3PO, though no recent updates have been provided.

Lando

A spinoff featuring Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian was announced in December 2020. Its development involved a pivot from a Disney Plus series into a film and the departure of showrunner Justin Simien, who learned of the change via public announcements rather than directly. Donald Glover and Stephen Glover took over writing duties.

The project shifted formats similarly to Obi-Wan Kenobi, which started as a movie before becoming a TV series. Former Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy stated in early 2026 that Glover turned in a script and that the project is still somewhat alive.
