Twenty One Pilots Set to Perform at 2021 Billboard Music Awards

twenty one pilots will perform their current single “Shy Away” at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards, set for May 23. The song, from the duo’s upcoming sixth studio album Scaled and Icy, was released April 7 and quickly became their eighth No. 1 hit on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay songs chart.

twenty one pilots, consisting of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun, are seven-time BBMA winners. Their biggest night at the BBMAs to date came in 2017, when they won five awards. Only Drake won more awards that night (13). Beyoncé also won awards five that night.

The duo had a big crossover hit last year, “Level of Concern,” which reached No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100. The duo has cracked the top five on that chart with three previous hits: “Stressed Out,” “Ride” and “Heathens.”

twenty one pilots’ 2015 album, Blurryface, entered the Billboard 200 at No. 1. Its 2018 follow-up, Trench, debuted at No. 2 on that chart. Scaled and Icy is due May 21.

BTS, Duran Duran, The Weeknd and DJ Khaled featuring H.E.R. and Migos are also set to perform at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards. P!nk will both perform and receive the Icon Award.

Also at the Nick Jonas-hosted show, Drake will receive the Artist of the Decade Award and Trae Tha Truth will receive the Billboard Change Maker Award.

The 2021 Billboard Music Awards will broadcast live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, May 23, at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on NBC.

The Weeknd leads all finalists with nods in 16 categories, followed by DaBaby with 11 nods, the late Pop Smoke (10) and Gabby Barrett (nine).

This year’s awards are based on the chart period of March 21, 2020 through April 3, 2021.
