Tron: Ares Director Calls Nine Inch Nails’ Participation in Soundtrack a Victory

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have returned with a new album crafted specifically for the forthcoming Tron sequel.

Although the franchise technically includes only two previous films (not counting the upcoming third), Tron has always leaned heavily on powerful scores — the 1982 original featured music by Wendy Carlos (who also worked on Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining and A Clockwork Orange), while 2010’s Tron: Legacy was defined by the iconic sounds of Daft Punk.

That legacy will be continued by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who this time contribute not merely as film-score composers — a role they’ve filled before — but as Nine Inch Nails, bringing the band’s unmistakable sonic identity to the project.

According to director Joachim Rønning, that choice gave the film the momentum and tonal edge needed to express the digital world bleeding into reality — a grittier, more industrial texture that reflects the third installment’s themes.

In previous interviews, Rønning has promised to elevate the audience’s experience with innovative camera work that mimics a program’s point of view and a new benchmark in visual effects. The film has already emerged as one of the most anticipated releases this fall, and Nine Inch Nails’ involvement has only intensified interest in its premiere.

The album TRON: Ares (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) by Nine Inch Nails is now available on several major streaming platforms.

The premiere of Tron: Ares is scheduled for October 8, 2025. The film stars Jared Leto, Gillian Anderson, Greta Lee, and Evan Peters.
