Treyarch’s Confusing Official Confirmation of New Call of Duty: Black Ops Releases

Nostalgic fans have reason to celebrate as two iconic titles from the Call of Duty franchise are set to make a comeback this summer. Treyarch officially confirmed this Wednesday that both Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 are arriving on PlayStation platforms this July. Development duties have been entrusted to Iron Galaxy, a studio with a stellar reputation for high-quality ports and technical support.

Treyarch noted that these versions will be comprehensive releases, featuring the complete campaign, multiplayer, and the beloved Zombies modes that defined the originals.

This news validates earlier speculation that emerged in May, when eagle-eyed observers spotted new ratings for both titles via the Korean Game Rating and Administration Committee. While initial rumors hinted at a multi-platform rollout—including a potential arrival on the Nintendo Switch 2—this current announcement focuses exclusively on the PlayStation ecosystem.

We have reached out to Activision representatives for further clarification, specifically regarding whether these ports will introduce modern enhancements, visual upgrades, or cross-platform play capabilities.

The original Call of Duty: Black Ops debuted in 2010 across the PlayStation 3, Wii, PC, and Xbox 360, with its successor, Black Ops 2, arriving on similar hardware in 2012. While both titles remain accessible on PC through Steam and enjoy backward compatibility on modern Xbox consoles, this new release marks a significant return to Sony’s ecosystem.

This isn’t Activision’s first foray into revisiting its back catalog; the company previously garnered praise for the 2016 launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered. This shift in strategy follows the mixed reception of 2025’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Despite strong sales figures, the lukewarm response prompted the publisher to re-evaluate its development roadmap and release philosophy for the franchise moving forward.

Looking ahead, Activision has set its sights on the October 23 launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Developed by Infinity Ward, the title promises a narrative centered on a volatile global conflict within the Korean Peninsula. Notably, the game is confirmed for a wide release across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, PC, and the Nintendo Switch 2, marking the first time the series has appeared on a Nintendo console since the 2013 release of Call of Duty: Ghosts.
