Tracy Chapman has sued Nicki Minaj, TMZ studies. The swimsuit reportedly issues “Sorry,” Nicki’s unreleased monitor with Nas that interpolates Chapman’s “Baby Can I Hold You.” According to the report, Chapman claims that Nicki’s monitor “compromises half of the lyrics and vocal melody” of Chapman’s track. Chapman is reportedly suing for damages, in addition to “for an order prohibiting Nicki and her team from releasing the song again.” Pitchfork has contacted representatives for Tracy Chapman and Nicki Minaj.
Shortly earlier than the discharge of her new album Queen, Nicki Minaj publicly asked Tracy Chapman to clear a sample. Nicki later tweeted “Sis said no,” probably referring to Chapman denying clearance. (Nicki has since deleted the tweet.) According to TMZ, Nicki’s staff “made multiple requests” in June to license “Baby Can I Hold You” and had been persistently denied.
On August 11, Funkmaster Flex premiered Nicki’s “Sorry,” which has since been eliminated, though leaks and rips can be found to listen to.
