The Witcher 3 Overtakes Skyrim on All-Time Bestseller List

If you’ve been wondering why CD Projekt is breathing new life into The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt with a fresh expansion over ten years after its initial launch, the answer is simple: the game has become an absolute juggernaut. With 65 million lifetime sales under its belt, it stands as the eighth best-selling video game in history, comfortably outpacing the original Super Mario Bros. and trailing only slightly behind Terraria. While it still has a mountainous climb ahead if it ever hopes to catch the 520 million units sold by Tetris, its enduring popularity is undeniable.

This milestone was shared in the studio’s latest financial disclosure. Alongside the Witcher news, CD Projekt revealed that the Cyberpunk Trading Card Game has secured $28 million via Kickstarter, marking it as the platform’s most successful funded game to date and the third most successful project overall.

Regarding Songs of the Past, the upcoming expansion for The Witcher 3, the developer dropped a few hints during an anniversary livestream Q&A. When discussing the scale of the new content, social media manager Laura Beitzel noted that Songs of the Past is aiming for a scope similar to the beloved Blood and Wine expansion. Given that Blood and Wine offered players roughly 28 hours of gameplay, fans can expect a substantial addition that feels more like a standalone title than a typical DLC.

For the dedicated strategists in the community, there is even better news: Songs of the Past will introduce fresh Gwent content. Despite CD Projekt winding down official support for the standalone Gwent: The Witcher Card Game in 2023, the promise of new cards within this expansion is a welcome surprise for the fanbase.

CD Projekt Red’s development slate is currently packed. Beyond collaborating with Fool’s Theory on Songs of the Past, the team is fully invested in the development of The Witcher 4, which will focus on Geralt’s apprentice, Ciri. The studio is also juggling an ambitious remake of the original Witcher title and a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. Since those projects lack concrete launch dates, it is a safe bet that returning to Geralt’s world is the next milestone on their roadmap.
