Earned it! The Weeknd added another trophy to his collection on Sunday (May 23), when he took home the Top Hot 100 Song for “Blinding Lights” off After Hours at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards.
During his acceptance speech, the artist born Abel Tesfaye once again offered a cryptic tease of his potential upcoming project after thanking fans. “You guys make me want to do this forever. I love you so much,” he told the cheering crowd outside behind him. Then he offered fans the hint. “I just want to say, the After Hours are done, and the dawn is coming.”
The Weeknd offered a similar message earlier in the month when talking to Variety. “If the last record is the after hours of the night,” he told the publication at the time, “then the dawn is coming.”
Also nominated in the category of Top Hot 100 Song were 24kGoldn ft. Iann Dior for “Mood,” Gabby Barrett ft. Charlie Puth’s “I Hope,” Chris Brown & Young Thug’s “Go Crazy,” as well as DaBaby and Roddy Ricch’s “Rockstar.” Earlier in the evening, The Weeknd nabbed the trophy for Top Hot 100 Artist.
Nick Jonas hosted the 2021 festivities, which this year were held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
The Billboard Music Awards are produced by dick clark productions, which is owned by MRC. MRC and Penske Media are co-parent companies of Billboard.
