When the 2021 Emmy nominations were announced on Tuesday (July 13), there were some familiar names from the music world sprinkled among the TV honorees.
The Disney+ version of Hamilton scored acting nominations for the Broadway musical’s creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda, as well as Leslie Odom Jr., Daveed Diggs, Jonathan Gross, Renee Elise Goldsberry and Phillipa Soo. “Grateful to make things for you,” Miranda tweeted in celebration of the show’s nominations, while Goldsberry added: “HALLELUJAH, y’all! I just can’t stop thanking GOD!”
The Weeknd’s Super Bowl halftime show is nominated for outstanding variety special (live), and when a fan account pointed out that halftime productions from Bruce Springsteen, Prince and Bruno Mars were also nominated, The Weeknd acknowledged that his show is in “great company.”
Plus, Cynthia Erivo was recognized in the outstanding lead actress in a limited series or movie for her portrayal of the legendary Aretha Franklin in Genius: Aretha, writing on Instagram, “She’s Emmy nominated babies!!!”
RuPaul released a statement after RuPaul’s Drag Race scored 11 Emmy nominations this year, including outstanding competition program and outstanding host for a reality or competition program. “I have the distinct pleasure of working with the most creative and dedicated cast and crew in television,” RuPaul said in part. “But the success of Drag Race starts and ends with our amazing queens. It’s their tenacity, creativity and vulnerability that tells queer kids everywhere that they are loved and worthy of celebration.”
