Beaming into the 2021 Brit Awards remotely on Tuesday (May 11), the Weeknd trotted out a performance he’s been saving for a rainy day. Decked out in a sailor-style raincoat, the Weeknd crooned “Save Your Tears” in a brightly lit, sparse box as thunder and lightning raged above him.
It was another visually arresting performance from an album cycle that’s boasted an embarrassment of riches when it comes to awards show performances. He even busted out a bit of air keyboard playing to accompany the song’s lovely synth riff.
Toward the end of the song, he wandered out of the box to finish singing in the rain. It was there that he accepted the award for ‘international male solo artist’ from none other than former First Lady Michelle Obama.
After thanking his British fans for their support, he also spoke on the ongoing crisis in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. “To my people in Ethiopia who are suffering, you are deeply in my heart,” Abel Tesfaye said. “To everyone watching, please help where you can.”
