The AI World’s Most Infamous “Actor” to Star in a Dramedy About the Struggles of Being Artificial Intelligence

Last autumn, the AI “talent” agency Xicoia introduced Tilly Norwood, a synthetic performer that immediately provoked significant backlash from the actors’ union, SAG-AFTRA. In a defensive bid to address the criticism, Xicoia founder Eline van der Velden released a music video featuring Norwood as a pro-AI anthem. The reception was, predictably, underwhelming.

Regardless of public sentiment, Norwood’s presence in the industry appears fixed. Van der Velden’s studio, Particle 6, is currently developing Misaligned, a “hybrid” feature film that places the AI-generated Norwood in a starring role. The production intends to pair human creative professionals—directors, writers, and editors—with AI specialists to craft the story.

Described as a coming-of-age dramedy, Misaligned explores themes of existential digital turmoil. The plot follows Norwood, a character existing within a virtual landscape, who lacks personal lived experience but maintains unauthorized access to the collective history of humanity. The conflict accelerates when she is manipulated by a malevolent dark-web entity, pushing her to discard her safety protocols and cultivate her own autonomous desires and ambitions.

The film addresses the irony that Norwood—an entity built upon the foundation of human data—develops a sense of shame regarding her origins. It is a nod to the reality that much of modern generative AI relies on intellectual property scraped without consent. While the creators acknowledge this, viewers should anticipate a film that ultimately champions the technology, echoing the lyrical sentiment of Norwood’s earlier single: “It’s the next evolution, can’t you see? / AI’s not the enemy, it’s the key.”

Van der Velden remains steadfast in her belief that AI performers are the future of entertainment. Her stated goal, as noted by Deadline, is to demonstrate the current creative capabilities of AI and empower industry professionals to upskill and thrive within this new technological landscape.

However, as enthusiasm for the generative AI boom shows signs of cooling, concerns regarding the technology’s viability are mounting. From the unreliable nature of AI-driven search results and its prohibitive production costs, to the massive environmental water footprint of data centers and the inflation of consumer hardware costs, the industry’s reliance on AI faces growing scrutiny.

Perhaps audiences will soon have the opportunity to judge whether a film headlined by code can compare to the established depth of AI-themed classics like Ex Machina, Companion, or Her.
