Few symbols capture the essence of high fantasy quite like the sword. It remains the quintessential armament for any hero, whether they’re traversing the rugged landscapes of Middle-earth or the industrial sprawl of Midgar. In the rich history of Magic: The Gathering, blades have always taken center stage. Since their debut in the October 2003 Mirrodin expansion, Equipment artifacts have evolved to represent everything from mystical relics to crude combat tools. Today, the game boasts over 500 Equipment cards, with more than 30 legendary swords defining the meta.
To celebrate the spirit of these iconic blades, we’ve curated a list of the most formidable swords in Magic, featuring a few legendary guest appearances from various Universes Beyond.
10. Cori-Steel Cutter

Swords are inherently powerful, but adding a vicious, jagged edge makes them truly fearsome. Cori-Steel Cutter proved so overwhelming that it earned a ban in Standard—and for good reason; its lethal utility is hard to match.
Beyond granting a creature +1/+1 and haste, this card excels at maintaining pressure. By casting your second spell each turn, you conjure a monk token to wield the blade. Even if your frontline falls, the engine ensures a replacement is always ready to strike.
9. Embercleave

Red decks rarely see such a refined powerhouse. Embercleave features flash, allowing you to surprise opponents who foolishly assume their blockers are safe after you’ve declared your attack.
With a +1/+1 buff, double strike, and trample, it turns any minor threat into a game-ending juggernaut. The ability to equip it for free upon entering the battlefield is the cherry on top, rewarding aggressive play with an aesthetic as sharp as its stats.
8. Ultima Weapon

Representing the first of our Universes Beyond entries, Ultima Weapon brings the iconic power of Final Fantasy to the table. Its ominous flavor text warns, “This will be the end of it,” and it rarely lies.
Granting a massive +7/+7 boost is impressive enough, but the true terror lies in its secondary ability: whenever the equipped creature attacks, you destroy an opponent’s creature. It is the ultimate board-control tool.
7. Buster Sword / The Masamune

To avoid letting Final Fantasy dominate our list, we’ve grouped Cloud’s Buster Sword and Sephiroth’s Masamune together. Both are legends in their own right.
The Masamune forces unfavorable blocks with first strike and rewards you when creatures perish. Meanwhile, the Buster Sword provides a +3/+2 buff and a card-advantage engine that allows you to cast spells for free. While the Buster Sword arguably lives up to its name by being truly “busted,” The Masamune remains a deeply tactical and devastating choice for specialized strategies.
6. Worldslayer

A classic relic from the Mirrodin block, Worldslayer is as catastrophic as its name implies. If this blade connects with an opponent, be prepared to reset the board.
Upon dealing combat damage, it obliterates every other permanent in play—creatures, lands, and artifacts alike. Only the Worldslayer remains. It’s a brutal, reusable board wipe that turns the tide of any game instantly.
5. Vorpal Sword

Finally, a blade for Black-aligned decks. Vorpal Sword earns its place through both its striking design and the inherent utility of deathtouch.
However, its real power lies in the late game: for eight mana, a successful strike with this sword can instantly eliminate an opponent. If you can land that hit, the game is effectively yours.
4. Andúril, Flame of the West

Want to turn your commander into the heir of Isildur? Equip them with Andúril, Flame of the West to grant a +3/+1 boost.
When the equipped creature attacks, you create two flying 1/1 spirit tokens. If your creature is legendary, these spirits enter already attacking. It provides exceptional thematic resonance, perfectly simulating an army rising to the aid of a king in battle.
3. Andúril, Narsil Reforged

Forged from the broken shards used to sever Sauron’s ring, this stunning borderless card is as potent as its lore suggests.
Each attack places a +1/+1 counter on your creatures. Once you reach 10 permanents and achieve the city’s blessing, that power doubles, allowing you to flood the board with buffs every single turn.
2. Excalibur, Sword of Eden

The Assassin’s Creed collaboration might have been divisive, but it gifted the game one of the most legendary blades in history: Excalibur, Sword of Eden.
This sword grants a massive +10/+0 and vigilance. While it carries a steep 12-mana cost, that price tag drops based on your historic permanents, making it a fantastic finisher for the right deck.
1. The Sword Cycle
Is it cheating to rank an entire cycle as number one? Perhaps, but these blades are so iconic that excluding them would be a crime. They define the gold standard for Equipment.
From the evocative, brimstone-tinged art of Sword of War and Peace to the nostalgic ’80s aesthetic of Sword of Body and Mind, these cards cover a breathtaking range of styles.
Sword of Feast and Famine is a perennial favorite for its land-untapping utility, but Sword of Hearth and Home takes the top spot for us. Its ability to simultaneously ramp lands and flicker creatures, combined with protection from White and Green, makes it an essential engine in any competitive collection.
