Few video game introductions match the sheer kinetic energy of City Escape in Sonic Adventure 2. The moment Sonic leaps from a chopper and uses a chunk of rubble to carve down urban avenues while “Escape from the City” blares, a legendary gaming memory is forged. Whether experienced on the Sega Dreamcast in 2001 or the Nintendo GameCube a year later, this stage remains an absolute masterpiece of three-dimensional platform design. Ahead of its public display at Sega and iam8bit’s upcoming 35 Years of Speed: The Sonic Art Exhibit in Los Angeles, we’ve secured an exclusive look at the original blueprints Sonic Team used to map out the level during the game’s development.

Initially developed under the working title Project GAIA 2, the sequel carried the monumental burden of succeeding Sonic Adventure, a celebrated launch title for the ill-fated Dreamcast. Compounding this pressure, Sega faced severe financial turbulence as the PlayStation 2 thoroughly dominated the market. Teetering on the edge of exiting the hardware sector entirely, Sega drastically downsized the development squad and relocated them to San Francisco, California—a landscape that profoundly influenced the steeply graded street layouts of the game’s opening act.
“Our team of 120 got pared down to 11, sent to America, and told to go make Sonic Adventure 2,”
— Takashi Iizuka, Sonic Team Creative Officer and Director (Speaking in 2016)
Iizuka added regarding the monumental hurdle: “Part of what we had to resolve was, ‘How are we going to make the same game with 11 people when we have less than a tenth of the staff on-board?’ I was really tasked with trying to make the impossible possible.”
Despite these daunting constraints, Iizuka’s crew accomplished the unthinkable, engineering one of the Dreamcast’s most cherished titles in a mere year and a half. For veteran staff members like Iizuka, art director Hiroshi Nishiyama, and sound director Jun Senoue, Sonic Adventure 2 ultimately became their most treasured professional endeavor.
“It was a compact development squad, which allowed us to distill all the strongest elements of the predecessor and deliver a narrative and gameplay loop that resonated globally,” Iizuka reflected in 2022. Nishiyama echoed this sentiment, noting, “Immersing myself in American culture sparked a wealth of fresh concepts, enabling us to collaborate on a truly unforgettable experience.”
While Sonic Adventure 2 is permanently cemented in pop culture history for introducing Shadow the Hedgehog and featuring anthems like “Live and Learn,” City Escape stands tall as its crown jewel. The newly uncovered design documents meticulously map out the Hero campaign’s inaugural mission, outlining everything from the iconic snowboarding descent to the relentless pursuit orchestrated by the colossal G.U.N. truck.
