The latest box office returns are in, and the opening weekend for Supergirl has proven underwhelming. Pulling in a modest $38 million domestically, the film landed in a similar bracket to the lackluster debut of Joker: Folie à Deux. Meanwhile, Toy Story 5 continues its reign, maintaining its grip on the top spot at the multiplex.

As reported by Deadline, the $38 million opening falls short of the figures posted by the MCU’s own struggling entry, The Marvels. Global performance offered little reprieve, with the worldwide haul estimated at just $68 million. Compared to the year’s more successful wide releases, such as Michael and The Devil Wears Prada 2, Supergirl’s debut is a concerning development for the newly minted DCU under James Gunn’s leadership.

It was a sluggish week for the industry overall, with Jackass: Best and Last managing only $8.4 million—though notably on a far slimmer production budget. Despite facing a wave of new competition, Toy Story 5 managed to defend its territory, despite a 56% dip from its previous week.
