The dark chronicles of Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord have finally unfolded, plunging audiences into a gritty narrative centered on the former Sith Lord (voiced by Sam Witwer). Set against the backdrop of the lawless world of Janix, Maul seeks to resurrect his criminal domain. Standing in his way are relentless authorities like Captain Brander Lawson (Wagner Moura) and a disillusioned young Jedi, Devon Izara (Gideon Adlon). While Maul maneuvers to claim Devon as his own disciple, he faces a formidable ideological rival in her current mentor, Eeko-Dio Daki (Dennis Haysbert).

Though Daki’s origins and species remain shrouded in mystery, the series’ executive producers recently shed light on the inspiration behind the character’s name and his spiritual lineage within the galaxy far, far away. Speaking with Polygon, head writer Matt Michnovetz explained that the choice of a hyphenated name was a deliberate stylistic nod to the franchise’s most esteemed figures.

“We don’t see many Jedi with hyphenated names like Obi-Wan Kenobi or Qui-Gon Jinn,” Michnovetz observed. “That naming convention evokes a more regal, ancient era. We wanted to imbue Daki with that same sense of history—portraying him as a stoic, centuries-old figure who shares the steady nature of Qui-Gon.”

Despite his weathered and somewhat disheveled appearance, Daki carries the unmistakable poise of the Jedi Order’s golden age. He is a study in calm, compassion, and intellect—traits that align him with the masters of old. This composure stands in sharp relief to the frantic uncertainty of his apprentice, Devon. In the turbulent aftermath of Order 66, Devon struggles to reconcile her shattered reality with her training, making her increasingly vulnerable to the temptations Maul offers.

By aligning Daki with legendary figures like Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, Michnovetz may be subtly foreshadowing the challenges ahead. Both of those masters famously struggled to keep their pupils on the righteous path, often with galaxy-altering consequences. As Shadow Lord progresses, the central question remains: can Daki succeed where his predecessors faltered and shield his apprentice from the pull of the Dark Side?
