The latest animated venture from Dave Filoni, titled Maul – Shadow Lord, delves into the odyssey of the disgraced Sith (voiced by Sam Witwer) as he orchestrates a campaign of retribution against his former underworld partners. Operating from the shadows of Janix—a dense metropolitan world perched on the edge of the newly forged Galactic Empire—Maul is aided by his loyal lieutenant, the Mandalorian warrior Rook Kast (Vanessa Marshall). Because Filoni previously established the foundations of this criminal empire in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, here is a concise primer to bring you up to speed before Shadow Lord begins, especially if it has been a while since the series finale in 2020.
Maul’s path has been defined by trauma and obsession since his defeat at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi in The Phantom Menace. Having survived his bisection through sheer hatred, he spent years in a state of fractured sanity, utilizing cybernetic spider legs to navigate his exile. He was eventually recovered by his brother, Savage Opress, and the pair launched a crusade against Kenobi. This quest for vengeance led them to an alliance with Death Watch, a militant Mandalorian splinter group intent on overthrowing the pacifist government of Duchess Satine Kryze.
Recognizing that brute force alone wouldn’t secure his dominion, Maul began subverting major criminal factions, including the Black Sun, the Pyke Syndicate, and the Hutt Clan. He consolidated these disparate syndicates alongside the Nightbrothers of Dathomir to form the Shadow Collective. This burgeoning empire wasn’t just a personal playground; it was intended to be a power base formidable enough to rival his former master, Darth Sidious, then masquerading as Chancellor Palpatine.
Internal strife nearly ended Maul’s ambitions when Pre Vizsla, the leader of Death Watch, attempted a betrayal. Maul countered by challenging Vizsla to a ritual duel, executing him and seizing the Mandalorian throne. While many Mandalorians viewed him as an illegitimate usurper, Rook Kast remained steadfast, famously repainting her Beskar armor in the crimson and black motifs of her new master.
Maul’s reign was eventually crushed by the combined pressure of the Jedi and the Sith. After Sidious personally intervened to strike down Savage Opress, Maul was later captured by Ahsoka Tano during the Siege of Mandalore. His captivity was short-lived, however; as Order 66 commenced and the Republic fell, Ahsoka released him to sow chaos, providing her a window to escape the clones’ betrayal.
Maul – Shadow Lord takes place in the volatile era immediately following Revenge of the Sith. With the Jedi decimated and Palpatine reigning as Emperor, the galaxy is being reshaped by the Imperial machine. On Janix, Maul and his remaining loyalists seek to reclaim their lost influence and punish the syndicates that abandoned them during the siege. Beyond mere survival, Maul is driven by a dark destiny: the search for a new protégé to uphold the Sith Rule of Two and eventually challenge the Emperor’s supremacy.
The inaugural 10-episode season of Maul — Shadow Lord arrives on Disney Plus on April 6, beginning with a special two-episode premiere. New chapters will air in pairs every Monday, leading up to the Star Wars Day celebration on May 4.
