Lucasfilm maintained its animation momentum for Star Wars in 2026. The studio reunited fans with Darth Maul in Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, with a second season following Maul and Devon Izara confirmed to be in production. Lucasfilm and Japanese anime studio Production I.G. then released The Ninth Jedi.

The eight-episode series streams in its entirety on Disney Plus. It follows two animated shorts previously released in the anthology series Star Wars: Visions. The first season follows Lah Kara, Jedi Master Margrave Juro, and other apprentices as they search for Kara’s father, Lah Zhima. They also seek allies to oppose a tyrannical army oppressing the galaxy under General Nawaam.

Production I.G. built the story across eight episodes, each lasting between 20 and 25 minutes. The Ninth Jedi captures elements from every era of the franchise. The ending follows Kara and her new Jedi Order, leaving viewers to wonder what will happen next.

Star Wars: The Ninth Jedi’s ending explained

The early episodes of The Ninth Jedi blend elements of A New Hope and Rogue One. Kara, Juro, and fellow recruits find allies on planets like Bibin and Makoma Ko. They grapple with the revelation that Lah Zhima killed his master, Reno Tsuba. Kara and the others question whether Zhima works with Nawaam, a masked Kylo Ren-esque figure planning to conquer the galaxy.

Kara and Zhima’s relationship mirrors Jyn and Galen Erso. Zhima makes controversial decisions for benevolent reasons. Unlike Galen, Zhima escapes Nawaam and the Sith warrior Gennoh with help from a Jedi named Ethan, reuniting with Kara later in the series.

In the finale, Kara and her allies race against time. They discover Nawaam was corrupted as a young Padawan after witnessing Zhima slay his master. Nawaam plans to use a giant kyber crystal on Hy Izlan to power a kyber cannon capable of tearing the galaxy apart. Nawaam seeks a state beyond Light and Dark to subjugate everyone.

Allies from Bibin and Makoma Ko arrive to distract Nawaam’s forces. Meanwhile, Kara, Zhima, Homen, Ethan, and Bee-Toh confront Nawaam and the crystal.

The Ninth Jedi series

Zhima and Nawaam clash briefly. Believing her father defeated, Kara confronts the general while others target the cannon. Wielding silver-bladed lightsabers, Kara and Nawaam duel. Nawaam believes he abandoned emotion for a higher purpose, but Kara points out that his desire to dominate the weak aligns with the Sith. Nawaam’s lightsaber turns red. Kara’s saber turns green, matching Juro’s, proving she found peace as a Jedi.

Kara spares Nawaam. The others destroy the kyber crystal, disabling the cannon. Nawaam’s forces surrender or retreat.

The galaxy is saved, but The Ninth Jedi leaves room for future stories. Juro’s Jedi Order is realized under Kara.

Is Kara the new leader of the Jedi Order?

The Ninth Jedi portrays the Jedi differently than classic canon. Anyone desiring to protect the weak can become a Jedi, regardless of Force strength. Kara recruits Tafflah, Kwana, and Bee-Toh, who admit they lack traditional qualifications.

By the end of the series, this trio alongside Homen and Ethan ignite lightsabers. With Kara wielding a saber matching Juro’s color, she leads the new Jedi Order.

Did Nawaam kill Zhima?

The final scene of The Ninth Jedi shows an imprisoned Nawaam in an underground bunker. Zhima appears and offers him a lightsaber. The scene cuts to black with the sound of a lightsaber igniting.

Nawaam could take the saber and accept redemption, matching Zhima’s regret over turning him into a monster. Alternatively, Nawaam could use the weapon against Zhima, repeating patterns seen with characters like Kylo Ren.

The cliffhanger leaves the outcome ambiguous.

Will there be a season 2 for The Ninth Jedi?

As of this writing, Lucasfilm has not confirmed a second season for The Ninth Jedi. Open narrative threads include the direction of Kara’s Jedi Order and a potential redemption arc for Nawaam.

Production I.G. has enough material for a second season, though its greenlight remains unconfirmed.
