Star Wars’ controversial “Reylo” pairing is becoming a Prime Video rom-com

Let’s be candid: the transition from online fan fiction to mainstream literary success has become an increasingly common narrative. It is no longer surprising to discover that a beloved breakout novel originated as a passion project on a fan-fiction site. For instance, Rachel Reid’s Heated Rivalry began its life as a “Stucky” story featuring Steve and Bucky from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Similarly, the cultural phenomenon of 50 Shades of Grey by E.L. James famously started as a reimagining of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen’s relationship from the Twilight series.

Now, a new title has emerged from this creative pipeline: The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood.

Originally published on the archive site Archive of Our Own, Hazelwood’s story—titled “Head over Feet”—was penned under the handle “Ever-so-Reylo.” It meticulously charted the intense, evolving connection between Rey and Kylo Ren within a contemporary setting. Years later, that fan-centric spark has been transformed into a fully realized, standalone romantic comedy hitting screens this September.

The adaptation stars Lili Reinhart as Olive Smith (the character originally based on Rey) and Tom Bateman as Professor Adam Carlsen (originally Ben Solo), who find themselves in an awkward, forced-dating arrangement after a spontaneous encounter. While the premise might seem like standard fan-fic fare, Hazelwood’s chemistry-heavy writing elevated the source material, eventually catching the attention of literary professionals who encouraged her to pivot to original fiction. As Hazelwood noted in an interview with Collider, her agent was eager to see her adapt these concepts for a broader audience.

Although the setting has shifted far from the Star Wars galaxy, the character dynamics remain distinctly familiar. The story includes analogs for Finn and Poe—as supportive, if occasionally meddlesome, friends—and even a nod to the legendary Han Solo through a professor character. Naturally, these elements were overhauled to stand on their own as a unique intellectual property.

Even so, the film’s roots remain an open secret. Tom Bateman, who is married to Daisy Ridley, is well aware of the project’s origins in the “Reylo” fandom.

It may not be the Star Wars epic some fans are waiting for, but for those seeking a fresh take on that specific brand of intense, star-crossed longing, The Love Hypothesis arrives on Prime Video on September 23.
