Star Trek Receives New Blu-ray Release Ahead of 60th Anniversary

Die-hard Trekkies might want to brace their bank accounts, as Star Trek: The Original Series is set to receive yet another home media re-release. This 60th-anniversary commemorative box set is scheduled to hit shelves on September 8.

Fans can choose from three distinct tiers: a standard DVD collection for $101.99, a base Blu-ray set for $104.99, and a premium Amazon Exclusive Edition retailing at $139.99. All variations include the complete 79-episode library, featuring 1080p high-definition remasters and restored original audio, alongside over nine hours of bonus content.

The exclusive collector’s edition sweetens the deal with unique physical mementos, including a 4-inch vinyl record of the iconic theme song, a set of collectible lobby cards, and refreshed, specialized packaging.

Despite the milestone, the reception has been lukewarm. The set currently holds a modest 2.7 rating on Amazon, with many collectors lamenting that this iteration feels sparse compared to previous anniversary bundles. Specifically, enthusiasts recall the 50th-anniversary collection from a decade ago, which offered a more robust package—including the original series, the first six films, and Star Trek: The Animated Series—all for $208.99. Beyond the value proposition, many fans are expressing frustration that the studio opted for a 1080p release rather than a long-awaited 4K upscale.

The announcement comes at a challenging time for the franchise. The once-crowded slate of series has dwindled, leaving only Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy as the final standing live-action pillars. With Lower Decks, Prodigy, and Discovery having concluded their runs in 2024, and the recent critical failure of the streaming film Star Trek: Section 31, the atmosphere among the fanbase is one of transition and uncertainty.

With Strange New Worlds season 4 arriving on July 23 and the final chapter of Starfleet Academy slated for 2027, the long-term roadmap for the franchise remains murky. Following the quiet cancellation of the project that would have seen Chris Pine return as Kirk, the future of the silver-screen side of the franchise—now under new management at Paramount—is currently in flux, with no major cinematic projects confirmed.
