Square Enix confirms shutdown of lesser-known Final Fantasy VII remake

Square Enix has officially confirmed that Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis will cease operations on October 6, 2026. Since its launch in 2023, the mobile title will have enjoyed a lifespan of just over three years. This decision marks yet another addition to the publisher’s expanding list of mobile projects that have been sunset in recent years.

In an official statement, the developers expressed regret regarding the sudden nature of the announcement, acknowledging the disappointment it may cause the player base. While the team endeavored to maintain a high-quality experience, they admitted that continuing to do so had become untenable. Until the final shutdown date, players may continue spending their remaining Red Crystals; however, the company noted that refunds for unused premium currency will be restricted exclusively to residents of Taiwan.

Ever Crisis served as a unique, standalone interpretation of Final Fantasy 7, distinct from the high-fidelity remake trilogy currently in development. Through a series of episodic updates, the title successfully integrated the entire “Compilation of Final Fantasy 7” into one platform, allowing fans to revisit stories from Dirge of Cerberus to Advent Children under a single banner.

Notably, the game had yet to adapt the elusive mobile predecessor Before Crisis, which originally shuttered back in 2018. In a final farewell, producer Shoichi Ichikawa confirmed in a letter to the community that Before Crisis will finally make its way into the game, with its narrative being rolled out in three installments throughout July and August.

This move follows a trend of service terminations for Square Enix, including Nier Reincarnation in 2024, alongside Final Fantasy Brave Exvius and Dragon Quest of the Stars, which both closed in 2025. While Brave Exvius is being reincarnated as a console release titled Final Fantasy Resonance, and Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent inspired the console-based Octopath Traveler 0, the fate of other discontinued mobile titles remains uncertain. Whether Ever Crisis will eventually see a console transition remains a point of speculation, though fans of the title can only hope for a similar preservation effort.
