Spotify Relaunches Clubhouse Competitor Locker Room as ‘Spotify Greenroom’

Spotify is relaunching Locker Room, the live audio app it acquired in March via the purchase of Betty Labs, as Spotify Greenroom, the company announced today.

Available now, Spotify Greenroom boasts new branding, an updated look and feel and a user-friendly onboarding experience. Existing Spotify customers can use their Spotify login credentials for the app, which gives all users the ability to and host participate in live rooms. It additionally includes chat controls and recording capabilities “so you can complement your on-demand content with live conversations,” according to a blog post announcing the launch.

Greenroom is available on both iOS and Android devices in over 135 markets globally. Additional new programming will be added as the app grows, with topics spanning music, culture, entertainment and sports. In the blog post, Spotify noted that Greenroom will “continue to evolve as we learn more about what creators and listeners want from their live audio experience.” Notably, live music broadcasts will not be allowed on Greenroom, as the app is not covered by Spotify’s current music licenses.

In tandem with the Greenroom announcement, Spotify also revealed the forthcoming launch of a Spotify Creator Fund, in an effort to help live audio creators monetize their work. Participation info will be made available once the fund opens later this summer.

Spotify is just the latest brand to encroach on Clubhouse’s dominance in the burgeoning live audio space. Other recently-announced competitors include Twitter Spaces, Discord’s Stage Channels and Facebook’s Live Audio Rooms, which had its first public test at a Mark Zuckerberg-hosted event on Tuesday. LinkedIn has confirmed the development of a similar product.
