Sony to Return Over Half a Billion Dollars Without PS5 Owner Compensation

Sony will receive approximately $508 million from import duty refunds following a decision by the US Supreme Court.

Sony’s gaming division will receive over half a billion dollars after the US Supreme Court ruled previously introduced import tariffs illegal. US authorities must now return the paid funds to technology companies.

A significant portion of this amount will go to the PlayStation division, which suffered the most from the previous tariffs.

This was reported in Sony’s official financial report for the first quarter of fiscal year 2026 (April–June 2026). The company stated that it expects to recover roughly 80 billion yen, or $508 million, in custom duties previously paid by the entire group. The tariff refund became one of the main reasons for a 37% increase in segment operating profit, up to 202 billion yen or $1.26 billion, and helped raise the full-year operating profit forecast.

The news caused discontent among gamers. Sony had previously cited the introduction of these tariffs to explain last year’s price increases for PS5 consoles. Despite the upcoming large refund, the company does not intend to compensate customers who purchased consoles at the higher prices.

Although the first lawsuits have already been filed against Sony, the publisher does not plan any payouts or refunds. The company believes that buyers who purchased consoles at the elevated price voluntarily agreed to the terms of the transaction.
