Sony Pictures freezes Spider-Man villain spinoffs
Following several setbacks, Sony Pictures has decided to revise its plans for the Marvel characters it controls.
Sony Pictures has effectively paused the development of its own lineup of films featuring characters from the Spider-Man comics. Company head Tom Rothman acknowledged that solo projects such as “Morbius,” “Madame Web,” and “Kraven the Hunter” failed to win over audiences:
“Ultimately, the public just wasn’t satisfied enough with them. Whether that assessment of these films is fair or not, who knows. There’s no point in arguing about it. The audience is the boss here, and they didn’t respond. It’s as simple as that.”

At present, Sony has no active projects about Spider-Man’s enemies or allies in development. Previously announced films such as “El Muerto,” “Sinister Six,” “Agent Venom,” and a Silver Sable movie are not officially in production. Rothman emphasized that the company never viewed these releases as part of a single cinematic universe, but merely sought interesting stories for individual characters.
“We never called it the ‘Sony Marvel Universe’. We looked at the possibility of making worthy films about other characters. At the present moment, not a single such project is in active development.”
Consequently, Sony is no longer pursuing the potential Spider-Man spinoffs that were previously reported. Meanwhile, the main series of Peter Parker films continues to develop separately and is created in collaboration with Marvel Studios. Following the success of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” the company has already expressed interest in a fifth film starring Tom Holland, although the project has not yet received an official green light.
