Sony Patents AI Matchmaking System Using Biometric Data

Sony has patented an artificial intelligence system designed to match players for multiplayer sessions by taking into account far more information than standard skill ratings and statistics.

The patent was published on September 10 and describes technology potentially intended for devices and services across the company’s ecosystem, including PlayStation.

According to the document, the system analyzes two types of data. The first category covers explicit information provided directly by the user, such as preferred games and genres, desired types of teammates, and other profile parameters. Such details can be gathered during profile creation or immediately before starting a game.

The second type consists of implicit data that the system can collect across various services within the Sony ecosystem. The patent lists potential sources including time spent in specific games, skill levels, shopping cart information, social media data, and user search history.

In certain embodiments, Sony also considers using biometric data, chat information, and audio data.

Player profiles are designed to update continuously under this framework. Users will be able to modify them manually, and the system will also prompt updates at specific intervals or when preferences shift. A feedback mechanism is included as well, allowing the compatibility profile to adapt to changes in player behavior.

The patent also outlines a dedicated menu featuring recommended teammates who exceed a specified compatibility threshold. Examples include benchmarks of 80%, 85%, and 90%. The matching process takes into account not only similarities between players but also complementary skills. For instance, the system might attempt to pair a strong support player with suitable tank and duelist roles to form a more balanced team.
