Sony cut production costs for the updated PS5 Slim, but buyers won’t notice

The console now features a matte side panel in place of the glossy finish.

Sales have begun in Europe for the refreshed PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, which now sports an entirely matte exterior.

Additionally, whereas the previous PS5 Digital Edition shipped with a 1 TB drive, the new revision reduces the SSD capacity to 825 GB — yet the price remains the same.

I like it. The matte finish may read as slightly less premium, but the glossy surface tended to attract fingerprints and scratches quickly.

Evans also noted the new model is about 120 grams lighter than its predecessor, likely due to a redesigned heatsink made from thinner metal. Despite the updated cooling layout, power draw and operating temperatures remain largely comparable between the two versions.

This is excellent engineering. They took a proven design, made it lighter and cheaper to produce, and preserved the original performance and thermal behavior. The manufacturer cut production costs but did not pass those savings on to consumers.
