Sony Calls PlayStation 5 Its Most Financially Successful Console
The company did not disclose that a large share of the device’s strong profitability is driven by the overall rise in prices for games and digital content.
Sony Interactive Entertainment has hailed the PlayStation 5 as the most successful console in the company’s history, co-head Hideaki Nishino announced at the Tokyo Game Show 2025.
During his presentation Nishino displayed a chart comparing revenue across every PlayStation generation. According to the figures, the PS5 has brought in $136 billion, outpacing its predecessors: the PlayStation 4 at $107 billion, the PS3 at $71 billion, the PS2 at $44 billion, and the original PlayStation at $24 billion. The PS5 total includes projections for the current fiscal year.
In a 2024 interview with Famitsu, Nishino reiterated Sony’s commitment to traditional home consoles. Despite speculation about a move toward cloud-based offerings, he said the PS4 and PS5 still show strong player engagement and that hardware remains the cornerstone of the company’s gaming business.
