Snoop Dogg Apologizes for ‘Lightyear’ LGBTQ+ Remarks: ‘My Bad’

Snoop Dogg has issued a response following the criticism he received over his remarks about LGBTQ+ inclusion in animated films aimed at children.

On Wednesday, August 27, the 53-year-old icon addressed the uproar in the comments of a Hollywood Unlocked Instagram post after media personality T.S. Madison challenged his reaction to seeing a same-sex pair in Pixar’s 2022 feature, Lightyear.

“I was simply taken aback and didn’t have an explanation for my grandsons,” Snoop wrote. “All my LGBTQ+ friends understand and have reached out to me with love.”

He added, “I apologize for not having an answer for a six-year-old … teach me, I want to learn; I’m far from perfect.”

These remarks followed his appearance on the August 20 installment of Dr. Sarah Fontenot’s It’s Giving podcast, where he shared how taking his grandson to see Lightyear led to an unexpected teachable moment when he realized one of the female characters was in a same-sex marriage and had a child with her partner.

“My grandson leaned over and asked, ‘Papa Snoop, how does a woman have a baby with another woman?’” Snoop recalled. “I just came to enjoy the movie—I wasn’t prepared for that.”

He continued, “Now I’m hesitant to return to theaters, worried I’ll face conversations I can’t answer on the spot.”

His comments ignited a wave of backlash on social media, with many accusing him of homophobia. Among those who responded was Lightyear writer Lauren Gunderson, who defended the inclusion in a Threads post on August 27.

“While crafting early drafts of Lightyear, it felt natural to portray the character with a female partner,” Gunderson wrote. “That small line makes a big difference. I was thrilled it stayed in the final cut.”

She added, “Though my role in the finished script was limited, seeing a joyful queer couple, even briefly, fills me with pride. Representation matters because love like this is real.”

Lightyear features a brief scene in which Alisha is revealed to be queer and in a committed relationship, sharing a kiss with her partner. The cameo prompted bans in the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, and drew criticism from U.S. conservative figures accusing Disney of advancing a “pro-LGBTQ+ agenda.”
