Silk Sonic’s ‘Skate’ Rolls Into Top 10 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart

Silk Sonic glides to a second top 10 hit on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart as “Skate” debuts at No. 4 on the list dated Aug. 14. The second single from the duo of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak begins as the genre’s best-selling song of the week.

“Skate,” released July 30, is the long-awaited second single from Silk Sonic and follows the duo’s debut release from March, “Leave the Door Open,” which ruled Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for eight weeks between May and July.

As Silk Sonic’s activity also contributes to Mars and .Paak’s individual chart careers, “Skate” becomes the former’s eighth top 10 hit on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and the latter’s second.

Elsewhere, “Skate” begins at No. 3 on the Hot R&B Songs chart and at No. 14 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100. The track is expected on the duo’s first joint album, An Evening With Silk Sonic.

The new track rolls to its high entrance in part thanks to 13,000 song downloads in the week ending Aug. 5, according to MRC Data. The figure sparks a No. 1 debut on the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales chart. Streams, too, begin favorably, with 13.4 million U.S. clicks in the same period, enough to muster a No. 2 arrival on the R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs chart.

In the radio airplay market, which contributes to the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart alongside sales and streams, “Skate,” following its release on July 30, generally makes improvements in its first full tracking week on airwaves (ending Aug. 8). The single advances 18-15 in its second week on the Adult R&B Airplay chart and makes its first appearances on Rhythmic Airplay (No. 23), Pop Airplay (No. 25) and Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay (No. 37). The support from various radio formats also played a crucial role in the high overall “Skate” debut on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, as radio airplay from all sectors supports a song’s placement.

Part of the quick airplay acceptance, of course, lies with the duo’s superstar status, particularly in the case of Mars, who has been a radio favorite for years. The pair is also still basking in the success of “Leave the Door Open” at multiple formats – the track ranks at No. 2 on Adult R&B Airplay (after 13 weeks on top) and captures a 17th week leading the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart.
