Shawn Mendes scores his seventh global chart hit with the debut of the Canadian singer-songwriter’s “Summer of Love,” featuring Puerto Rican producer Tainy. The wistful tune enters both the Sept. 4-dated Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. surveys at No. 35.
Mendes is no stranger to collaboration. Two of his previous global hits are duets with Camila Cabello, with another alongside fellow Canadian Justin Bieber. But notably, the Tainy co-bill is Mendes’ second consecutive entry alongside a Latin star. “KESI,” with Colombia’s Camilo, ranks on the Global Excl. U.S. at No. 165, after reaching No. 85 in July.
The lean toward Latin for Mendes follows one of his Cabello collabs. While 2019’s “Senorita” is sung fully in English, its lyrics (including the song’s title), instrumentation and even its official video incorporate Latin influences. The song (released prior to the Global charts’ September 2020 inceptions) topped the U.S.-based Billboard Hot 100 in August 2019, becoming Mendes’ first song to reach the tentpole.
“Senorita” has been a long-lasting success, as it spends its 51st week on both global charts, appearing each week of the lists’ existence. And though its popularity is fairly evergreen in the states, it has tracked better on the Global Excl. U.S. chart than the Global 200, by an average of 24 positions each week.
The wide-reaching international appeal of “Senorita” leads seamlessly into Mendes’ turn toward Latin collaborators for his 2021 releases. His duet with Camilo hit both global charts but has lasted longer and peaked higher on the Global Excl. U.S. chart. “Summer of Love” debuts with 21.1 million streams and 5,800 downloads sold globally in the week ending Aug. 26, according to MRC Data.
