Selena Gomez Remembers How She and Taylor Swift First Bonded Over Their Jonas Brothers Breakups

Long before they dominated the charts, Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift discovered an enduring friendship through their teenage romances with the Jonas Brothers.
On the August 6 episode of Jake Shane’s podcast Therapuss, Gomez laughed as she recalled meeting Swift nearly twenty years ago: “I was dating Nick, Taylor was dating Joe, and none of us knew what we were doing—yet here we all are, still close.”
“Taylor and I often joke that our biggest takeaway from those relationships was finding each other,” Gomez continued. “I was about 15, she was 18—she had the wild curly hair and armful of friendship bracelets—I think our breakups just solidified our bond.”
Today, the pair remain unwavering supporters of one another’s careers. In March, Swift praised Gomez’s collaborative album with her fiancé Benny Blanco, I Said I Love You First, and in May Gomez celebrated Swift’s triumph in reclaiming her master recordings.
Just weeks before that podcast aired, Swift even baked Gomez a sourdough loaf—a playful nod to Taylor’s 2009 hit “Love Story”—to honor her friend’s “loaf story” with Blanco.
Gomez also revealed that the first song Swift ever played for her was “Love Story” before it saw the light of day. “We were in a hotel room and she said, ‘I think this might be my first single,’” Gomez remembered. “I instantly thought, ‘This is one of the most beautiful songs ever.’”
